I noted a few weeks ago that Warren City Council President Jim Fouts was questioning the need for both a Police Commissioner and a Police Chief for the Warren Police Department.

I believe a little History lesson for Mr. Fouts and anyone else concerned should clear up the issue.

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – It’s the crucial moment of a hostage standoff as SWAT team members storm a building. Once inside, the situation changes and the team needs to contact superiors outside, but are unable to because of bad radio reception.

This problem, made evident during a series of school hostage and terrorist attack practice scenarios over the past two years, is just one of many that the debut of the county’s new 800 MHz digital-trunked communication system aims to solve.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office will participate in a regional study to make recommendations on consolidating dispatch services for multiple cities and townships.

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday, Nov. 21, to approve up to $50,000 of the Sheriff’s Office wireless 911 funds to be used for the study.

Explorer Post 565, affiliated with the Office of the Macomb County Sheriff, has been in existence for several years. The post started with one advisor and a few high school students who expressed an interest in becoming police officers. Over the years, the post has continuously grown. The post members today include students from all over Macomb County.

School is finally back in session, and for many Macomb County students, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. "The greatest risk for these children is not riding the bus, but when they are approaching or leaving the bus," says Macomb County Sheriff Mark A. Hackel. Both children and adults must know and follow traffic safety rules designed to keep them safe.

MACE is a computer crimes task force formed by Sheriff Hackel. MACE will investigate complaints, which involve computer type crimes.

There are officers/deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and the FBI assigned to the Task Force. They investigate computer fraud, identity theft and child pornography cases.

The Office of the Sheriff is more than 1,000 years old. From the beginning of English and Scottish law, the sheriff's office was the center of the local administration of justice. The word "reeve" meant an administrative office and the word "shire" was the equivalent of a county. Therefore, the first office title was "Shire-Reeve", which was in time, shortened to the word "Sheriff" as we know it today.

Macomb County Sheriff Mark A. Hackel’s latest crime-fighting tool is a huge, 30-foot black command center with gold and white writing and sheriff ’s decals on the sides. It resembles a recreational vehicle with all of the goodies to keep law enforcement comfortable when called to an emergency situation.
