West Bosnian Festival, Macomb County

Freedom Hill County Park in Macomb County is well known for welcoming various wonderful ethnic festivals to the area, and this year is no different. For more than 20 years, the Polish Festival and Festa Italiana have been enjoyed by thousands of Macomb County residents as well as others from far away.

This year, Freedom Hill County Park welcomes a new festival. The West Bosnian Krajiski Teferic is in its 11th year, but new to Sterling Heights. The festival is a gathering of natives who originated in the western segment of Bosnia-Herzegovina but now reside in various areas throughout North America. The festival serves as a reminder of the mass exodus of West Bosnians who left their homeland in 1994 and 1995.

Bosnian heritage will be celebrated with musical performances and folklore performances by Bosnian dance ensembles representing many locations from around the United States. There will be traditional Bosnian food to enjoy, a soccer tournament, and many activities for the kids.

The festival will run on Saturday, August 23rd from noon until 11:00 pm. Admission is free. Freedom Hill Park is located in Sterling Heights on Metropolitan Parkway, east of Schoenherr, in Macomb County. Visit freedomhillcountypark.com for more information about this and other fun events still going on this summer season.

Warren Summerfest In Macomb County

There is another fun day planned for the residents of Macomb County next weekend. The Warren Summerfest will take place on Saturday, August 23rd. The festivities begin at 2:00 pm and will end at 6:00 pm. All activities are free to participants.

The Warren Summerfest was started by Liberty Family Outreach. The Outreach began as one church working to help the community and now many Warren community leaders and churches have bonded together to help area families. Reaching out to children who have home life difficulties is a primary focus for Liberty Family Outreach. This group realizes the importance of family unity and provides financial assistance as well as social and spiritual guidance for families in need. Liberty Family Outreach provides many services for the community. There are weekly meetings, retreats, and annual events to attend as well.

While visiting the Warren Summerfest, Macomb County residents will certainly enjoy the many freebies that are available. Food (of course), iPods, a television, backpacks, bike repairs, family portraits, CD players, school supplies, basketballs and even haircuts, to name a few, will be given away.

Shaw Park is certainly the place to be. The park is located on Warner, north of Eight Mile Road, between Dequindre and Ryan. For more information visit: www.warrensummerfest.com for more information.

Now that summer is quickly winding to a close, it is time for Macomb County residents to prepare for another fun school year for the kiddies. Preparing involves more than buying bookbags, supplies and lunchboxes.

Parents who have children entering Kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year are encouraged to call the Macomb County Health Department office, which is located in Mt. Clemens, to receive their free vision and hearing tests for their children. Keep in mind that these tests are required for all children that are entering school for the first time. It is important to identify any problems that your child may have with vision or hearing at an early age so that they can have every educational advantage available at their fingertips.

Macomb County Health Department will also be willing to test any child from the ages of 3 – 18 when parents or guardians have concerns about their vision and hearing issues. Testing is simple and painless.

All exams must be scheduled in advance by calling (586) 412-5945. All vision and hearing tests are conducted at the Mount Clemens Health Department office only. The address is: 4325 Elizabeth Road in Mount Clemens.

Macomb County, There's No Substitute for Real Exercise

Hold on to your hats Macomb County for exercise in a pill is too good to be true. There's been a lot of hype over a new pill that claims to eliminate the need for exercise and boost the performance of those who engage in exercise.

"Frank Booth, a University of Missouri expert on the science of inactivity, says the “exercise pill” study did not test all of the commonly known benefits of exercise and taking the pill cannot be considered a replacement for exercise."

For instance Maomb County, these were NOT tested:

Decreased resting and submaximal exercise heart rate

Increased heart stroke volume at all exercise work loads

Increased maximal exercise cardiac output

Lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness

Increased aerobic capacity

Check out the list of 25 benefits of exercise that were NOT tested here.

When you're ready in Macomb County, contact me to get fit and healthy the natural holistic way.

Macomb County Powerhouse Gym Strongman Contest

Mark your calendar for next year's strongman contest at Macomb County Powerhouse Gym of Clinton Twp. The event is held on Sunday, during the Gratiot Cruise, and it is getting bigger (and better) every year.

This year's event in Macomb County included a live band, a dunk tank, moon bounce (for the kiddies), free t-shirts, and free burgers, hotdogs, cookies, and chips. There were games for all ages and fitness levels.

I especially enjoyed the tire flip, but they also had a pushup contest and farmer's walks. The truck pull was most popular as many women and children alike joined in to give it a try in Macomb County. Check out my video and come on out next year.
