Whether or not you actually read A Million Little Pieces by James Frey, for a while you heard so much about it, you may have felt like you read it.

You probably remember all the controversy: memoir writer found to have exaggerated the tales in his true life story. There was a lawsuit and a shameful appearance on Oprah. Now, James Frey is back with a new book. This time it is classified as a novel, so it is clear that he means this work to be read a fiction.

The hubbub surrounding Frey brought scrutiny to publishing and fact-checking (for a little while at least). It also made people consider how much of other memoirs and autobiographies may have been less than real.

Frey will be in the area on Thursday, May 22 for a book discussion and signing to promote is new book, Bright Shiny Morning. Come to hear him speak at the Borders Books in Downtown Ann Arbor at 7pm. (Well, the event starts at 7pm, maybe you’d better get there a little earlier).
