Mission

The mission of Macomb Literacy Partners (MLP) is to eliminate adult illiteracy in our community by developing programs that promote the advancement of literacy. MLP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization helping adults who have problems reading, writing, or speaking English. MLP provides free training for volunteer tutors who work one-to-one or in small group rsgoals enabling them achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency. Volunteer tutors meet with their literacy student(s) in quiet, private areas of public sites, i.e., library, church, community center. You and your student(s) will meet for a minimum of two hours each week at a mutually convenient time and location.

History

Initiated in 1984 by the Suburban Library Cooperative (SLC) and Utica Community Schools, Macomb Literacy Partners celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2004. It was created to respond to the needs of adults reading below a level of functional literacy. These are individuals who have difficulty reading a newspaper, understanding simple directions on a prescription, taking the written test for their driver's license, or who are limited English speakers. MLP volunteers have helped over 3,500 adults improve their skills.

Since MLP's beginnings, the SLC has acted as fiscal agent. Macomb County Library has served as host agency.
